Based on 811 reviewsShree Balajee Mess in Puducherry is widely recognized for its authentic North Indian and Rajasthani vegetarian cuisine, offering a homely and traditional dining experience. Reviewers consistently highlight the genuine flavors that closely replicate those found in northern India, making it a favored spot for both residents and travelers seeking familiar tastes. The food is praised for its simplicity, balanced spicing, and customization options, catering well to individual preferences such as dietary restrictions or oil content. The staff are noted for their friendly and efficient service, contributing to a welcoming atmosphere despite the modest and unassuming setup of the eatery. A common observation is that due to its popularity, the space can feel cramped during peak times, but this does little to diminish the overall appeal. Shree Balajee Mess stands out as a reliable destination for pure vegetarian North Indian fare in the heart of Pondicherry.
Shree Balajee Mess, A Hidden Gem for Authentic Vegetarian and Vegan Delights in Puducherry Nestled in the heart of Puducherry, Shree Balajee Mess is a humble, traditional vegetarian restaurant that has been serving wholesome, home-style meals for years. Despite its unassuming, almost mediocre appearance, this small eatery is a haven for food lovers seeking authentic South Indian flavors with a touch of vegan-friendly options. Its central location makes it easily accessible, though parking can be a bit of a challenge due to the bustling surroundings. The must-try dishes here are the Dal Roti and Sambar Rice, both of which capture the essence of comfort food. The Dal Roti is a perfect blend of soft, freshly made rotis paired with a flavorful, mildly spiced lentil curry that feels like a warm hug. The Sambar Rice, a South Indian classic, is aromatic, tangy, and served with a generous helping of vegetables, making it both hearty and healthy. Vegan options are seamlessly integrated, ensuring everyone can enjoy the wholesome goodness. Don’t miss the buttermilk, a refreshing, perfectly spiced drink that complements the meal. However, it’s advisable to bring your own bottled water, as the restaurant offers only local water bottles, which may not suit all preferences. Though no cozy ambiance but focus on fresh, home-cooked food make Shree Balajee Mess a must-visit for those craving an authentic, budget-friendly dining experience in Puducherry. Highly recommended for a soulful meal!
Food is simple and homely. I felt it to be one of the best north Indian Veg in Pondi. They customised my order for less oil and it really was so!
The best place for a Indian from north side of the country to enjoy the same taste as in the north if you have been in tamil nadu from a long time and have not had the same spicy and delicious taste from your hometown this is the best place to go to. Service is very fast and behaviour of staff is good only drawback is the space as it is very popular with people it is mostly crowded and there is not much place to sit very freely if they plan to expand the place It will be great.
Ever since I’ve been in Bangalore I craved for good North Indian food just like dhabas but this wish came true on my trip to Pondy. We asked some Zomato folks where could we eat some good North Indian food and they all told the same place. We went in there for the dinner on last day of our trip and the food we got there was proper Rajasthani taste food. We just kept ordering and eating like anything and ultimately we were full. Plus the place is so pocket friendly that the bill for 4 people with wholesome food and dairy drinks costed around 760 only. The place was so good that before leaving too we canceled our plan to visit Rock Beach and have our breakfast here only in the morning.
This review is purely based on food taste and quality. We were a bit skeptical after seeing the photos but I'm glad that we visited it. If you are looking for north Indian/Rajasthani food, this is the place you should visit. We ordered two Thali which costed 150/- each. The food was yum and had authentic Rajasthani taste. Owner and servers were also from Rajasthan and it was pleasant to talk to him. The ambience is a bit sub standard but it's located in busy Market and space is a luxury there. Price wise very pocket friendly. Parking will be a problem and you will have to park on the road sides in adjacent Streets. Mind the one-sided roads, Google map might show some outdated path as the traffic police have put boards of one-way only. So be extra vigilant of such boards. Overall, go for it if you are carving for North Indian food in Pondicherry/Puducherry.
